With a hybrid cable, parts of the data are transmitted via optical fibers (light signals) and the other part with copper wires.

The advantage of such an active optical cable is that a much longer transmission distance can be reached, because light signals are much less sensitive compared to electrical signals. Furthermore, hybrid cables are lighter in weight and have a smaller cable diameter compared to pure copper cables (on comparable length).

USB-C is becoming increasingly popular. In addition to tablets and smartphones, the standard is also used as video and power cable on workstations.

USB 3.2 is limited to short distances, with the hybrid cables now it is possible to reach longer distances.
